Since 2005 RCPD has given 48 promotions to 37 officers (4 officers were hired into upper ranks from outside agencies).
A total of 32% of promoted officers (12 officers) were People of Color (POC), whereas 36% of employed officers in that same time are POC.
A total of 11% of promoted officers (4 officers) were female, while 12% of employed officers in that same time are female.
A total of 3% of promoted officers (1 officer) were female officers of color; while 3% of employed officers (6 officers) in that time are female officers of color.
Making the transition from the rank of Police Officer to the supervisory position of Sergeant is a significant milestone. Officers have an median of 13 years of diverse experience before they promote to this critical leadership role within the Redwood City Police Department. The median number of years worked before promotion from Police Officer to Sergeant for officers of color is 12 years and 17 years for female officers.
Median age at promotion was 46 for all officers, 46 for officers of color, and 42 for female officers.

Notes on the data:

This dataset is from the Redwood City Police Department (RCPD).
The terms “male” and “female” and “sex” are used to describe an individual’s self-defined sex as opposed to their gender identity, which RCPD does not report.
The race categories in this dataset reflect those used by RCPD.
The term “POC” meaning “People of Color” is used to group the races reported in the data, these include people who identified as Asian, Black, Hispanic, Mixed, and Pacific Islander.
“Promotions” counts individual officers one time to generate “total employed officers”, whereas “Demographics” uses annual averages. The numbers may vary slightly between the two percentage results because of differing numbers of years worked.
