Solid Waste Rate Increases

On Monday, November 10, 2025, at 6:00 p.m., the City Council of the City of Redwood City held a public hearing to consider the following proposed monthly solid waste rate increases:

  • Beginning January 1, 2026 and January 1, 2027, $6.00 increases for regular, scheduled, basic collection of residential solid waste and recyclable materials for 20, 32, 64, and 96 gallon bins,
  • Beginning January 1, 2026 and January 1, 2027, 2.439% increase for unscheduled solid waste services.

These increases were approved and will be effective beginning January 1, 2026 and January 1, 2027. More information can be found on the Notice of Public Hearing on Proposed Solid Waste Rate Increases.

Water Rate Increases

On Monday, November 10, 2025, at 6:00 p.m., the City Council of the City of Redwood City held a public hearing to consider updates and increases to the City’s water rates for all water customers. These updates and increases were approved and will be effective on January 1, 2026, January 1, 2027, and January 1, 2028.  More information can be found on the Notice of Public Hearing here and the City of Redwood City Water Rate Cost-of-Service Study here.

Sewer Rate Increases

On Monday, April 1, 2024, at 6:00 p.m., the City Council of the City of Redwood City held a public hearing to consider updates and increases to all of the City’s sewer rates, for all sewer customers, beginning Fiscal Years (FY) 2024-25, 2025-26, and 2026-27.  These updates and increases were approved and are effective on July 1 of each year, beginning 2024, 2025, and 2026.  More information can be found here on the Notice of Public Hearing.  The City of Redwood City Sewer Rate Cost-of-Service Study can be found here.

Customer Assistance

To help customers with water and sewer bills received during the pandemic the City of Redwood City received $1,096,346 in 2022 and 2024 from the State Water Resources Control Board using federal American Rescue Plan Act funds for customer assistance.

Sewer Service Charges Collected on the County Tax Roll

Utility Billing 

The City of Redwood City bills residents for water, solid waste and sewer services. Some residents may be serviced by San Mateo County for their sewer service instead. If you are unsure of your sewer provider, visit Sewer FAQ.

Residential Billing

Residential customers are billed bi-monthly. Bills are due upon receipt and considered delinquent after thirty (30) days. 1.5% will be added if bill is not paid within 30 days; $3.00 or 5% of unpaid balance, whichever is greater will be added when an account is issued a shut-off notice.

Commercial Billing

Commercial customers are billed monthly. Bills are due within thirty (30) days. 1.5% will be added if bill is not paid within 30 days; $3.00 or 5% of unpaid balance, whichever is greater will be added when an account is issued a shut-off notice.

Starting Your Utility Service

When requesting utility service, it is necessary to fill out an application for starting utility services and sign for the services (water, solid waste, and sewer). Please fill out an application and return it to Revenue Services at:
